French Poker Has a New Leader: Jean-Noël Thorel Takes the Reign from ElkY

Poker player Jean-Noël Thorel

At the end of the Triton Poker Monte-Carlo stage, 76-year-old millionaire pharmacist Jean-Noel Thorel officially became the best player in France in terms of prize money earned. After a fourth-place finish in the $200,000 Special Triton Invitational and a ninth-place finish in the $40,000 Mystery Bounty, Thorel has a career winnings of 15,332,855 dollars.

It is interesting that for a long time the first place in the national ranking of French poker players was held by none other than triple crown winner Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier. ElkY is one of the most famous poker players of our time, but recently he moved away from poker. Currently, Grospellier has $14,974,465 in career earnings.

The fact that he is no longer the number one in his country was announced by "ElkY" himself on his Twitter:

In a humorous caption, Bertrand meant himself by "retired" one.

As for Thorel, he does not consider himself a professional player, but only someone who likes to play poker. He usually plays expensive offline tournaments with a small field. And this is not surprising considering his age and almost infinite bankroll, because Thorel is the owner and founder of a large pharmaceutical company. So for him, poker is really not about money.
