Game Complexity Rankings: MTG Leads the Pack, Hold'em at 138th

Game complexity rankings

There was a recent study conducted of all modern card and board games to compile a special ranking of these entertainments in terms of difficulty. For greater objectivity of the rating, the complexity of a particular game was assessed by the volume of rules. Or more precisely, by the number of words in the description of the rules of each game.

In this way, it was possible to rank 242 games, including various poker disciplines. So, for example, Texas Hold'em took 138th place in the rating, and Omaha poker took 139th place. According to the study, the rules of both these games contain about 2,200 words (although it was not specified where these texts came from).

Blackjack turned out to be easier than poker, which took 174th place in the ranking, and the description of its rules totals 1,271 words. It is interesting that chess ended up even lower in the ranking and took 209th place. As it turned out, the rules of this classic game contain only 678 words.

According to this rating, the Magic: The Gathering board game was recognized as the "most difficult" one. Its rules consist of more than 100,000 words, and the game itself contains 19,000 unique cards (compared to only 52 in poker). Magic: The Gathering has been popular for decades and many poker players at one time paid a lot of attention to this hobby. In particular, "Nacho" Barbero was a professional MGT player long before poker. Also such regulars as David Williams, Ike Haxton, Scott Siever, Justin Bonomo and Bryn Kenney started their careers with MGT.
