Playing Poker for Money Now Illegal Outside Casinos in Australian State

Tasmania state in Australia bans real money home games

The Australian state of Tasmania made headlines in the poker media due to the sudden ban on local tournaments and real money home poker games. The new regulation has been passed by the Tasmanian Liquor and Gambling Commission (TLGC).

The ban seems rather strange against the background of the news about the possible return of the Aussie Millions to Australia. But representatives of local poker leagues and clubs have already started receiving warnings from regulators.

"Unfortunately, the TPL (Tasmanian Poker League) has been informed of a change in the rules for local pub competitions. I will be meeting with our legal representative to see if I can host a game on our leaderboard this Saturday," TPL spokesman Martin Garland said on his Facebook page.

Essentially, Tasmanian players will now only be able to play real money poker at licensed casinos. The ban applies not only to the popular competitions of local poker leagues in pubs, but also to home games. The only way to legally enjoy the game outside of gambling establishments is to play for "matchsticks".

"Poker games or tournaments with prizes may be held legally provided that no participation fee is charged and players do not bet real money (or anything of value)."

It is worth noting that in Australia it is far from all the problems related to poker. In 2017, the country completely banned unlicensed online poker operators from offering their services to players. On the other hand, no regulatory and licensing procedures have yet been formed here.
