🃏 I Lost My First 7 Poker Games Here’s What I Wish I Knew Before I Started

I’ll be honest…

My first experience with poker was painful.

I wasn’t just losing, I was getting destroyed.

Every hand felt confusing. And somehow, I kept folding when I should’ve played… and played when I should’ve folded.

It took me weeks to realize something important:

👉 Poker isn’t about luck the way beginners think it is.

👉 It’s about decisions.

If you’re just starting out, this guide will save you from the mistakes that cost me time, money, and confidence.

First Things First: What Poker Really Is

Most beginners think poker is just about getting good cards.

Wrong.

Poker is a mix of:

• 🧠 Strategy

• 👀 Observation

• 💰 Risk management

Yes, luck plays a role but over time, skill always wins.

The Simple Rules

Here’s poker in the simplest way possible:

• You get 2 cards (your hand)

• 5 cards are placed on the table

• You make the best 5-card combination

That’s it.

But the real game?

➲ It’s in how you play those cards.

The First Big Mistake Beginners Make

Let me save you from this early:

➲ You don’t have to play every hand.

This was my biggest mistake.

I thought:

“Maybe this hand will turn into something…”

Nope. That’s how you lose money fast.

➙ Golden Rule

• Play fewer hands

• But play them strong

Starting Hands That Actually Matter

If you remember nothing else, remember this:

➫ Strong starting hands = higher chance of winning

Play these:

• High pairs (AA, KK, QQ)

• Strong combinations (AK, AQ)

Be careful with:

• Low cards

• Random combinations

➲ Beginners lose because they play “hope poker” instead of smart poker.

Position Is Your Secret Weapon

This is something nobody tells beginners early enough.

➙ Where you sit matters.

• If you act later, you see what others do first

• If you act early, you’re guessing more

➙ Simple advice:

• Play more hands when you’re last to act

• Be more careful when you’re first

This alone can improve your game instantly.

The Trap That Destroys Beginners

Let’s talk about something real:

➙ Chasing losses

You lose a hand…

Then another…

Then you think: “I need to win it back.”

That’s where things go downhill.

What I learned the hard way:

• Losses are normal

• Bad decisions are optional

Final Advice

If I could restart poker, I’d do this:

• Start small (very small)

• Focus on learning, not winning

• Be patient

• Stay disciplined

Because in poker…

👉 The players who last the longest are the ones who win the most.

Nice post, especially for beginners 👌

Biggest struggle at the start for me was exactly what you mentioned - playing too many hands and trying to “make something happen”. Took a while to accept that folding is actually winning in the long run.

It has worked for me many times

You just have to take your time and play solid hands

This is gonna sound quite weird. I learnt to play poker super super young. I was playing with my dad and sisters with matchsticks from about the age of 6.

I genuinely feel I lost a little bit of the FUN of learning. I can't remember any learning. It's as though I grew up and just know how to play.

My son's 17 and I'm having fun teaching him. I gave him your post to read he liked it. So my thumbs up is actually a double for you 👍
