Cashed in fifth in my first Cardmates freeroll
So, after joining this site today, I played my first Cardmates freeroll this evening; the $200 one on Party, and finished a respectable fifth after spending much of the tournament as chip lead or close to it. After a first hand double up (pocket AA vs AJ all in pre-flop) I just played solid, by-the-numbers poker. Nothing spectacular, but it did the job.
I had a number of frustrations. The fact that none of my small pocket pairs managed to hit a set was deeply annoying, and I ended up on the wrong side of a number of flips: none seriously damaging until a monster 3-way all-in flip for the chip lead (I think) five-handed on the final table. My pocket Ts vs pocket 9s vs A4o. The player with A4 (who I covered) flopped trips on a K44 board, and turned quad 4s. That turn gave me the better full house vs the player with the 9s (who had me covered) but I still lost a decent chunk of my stack which crippled my chances of going much further.
A few minutes later, my last tournament hand was, I think, a pretty standard bust-out. I'm big blind with 45 suited, short stack with a third of my chips in, so pretty much pot committed. Small blind open shoves. He covers me, but I figure in this spot he's probably jamming super-wide with any trash and my cards may even be ahead, so I call. In the end, he has AT off, and catches a ten on the river, knocking me out and leaving me with a little over $16 for my efforts. Still, a decent result, and there's always the next one.
