Stop blaming variance for everything

Alright, Let’s be honest for a second.

Every time someone runs bad for a few sessions, suddenly it’s all “variance”. Bad beats, coolers, unlucky spots. Standard story.

And yeah - variance exists. Obviously. But not every downswing is just bad luck.

I’ve seen it too many times. People lose a few buy-ins and instead of looking at their game, they just write it off. No review, no adjustments, just “unlucky”.

That’s how leaks stay hidden. Strong players don’t just accept results - they question them. Even when they win. If you’re always blaming variance, you’re probably missing something.

Not saying every loss is your fault. But not every loss is “just variance” either.

Agree. The best players I know review winning sessions just as hard as losing ones. That’s usually where the biggest leaks hide.

I am constantly reviewing my game. Win or lose.  I would say 90% of my early exits or losses were complete errors of judgement. Or simply trying to make something happen that wasn't there. Not variance just lack of concentration or frustration. But ultimately bad playing by myself.  That is parts of my game I know needs improving.  And only by looking back and analysing this will I ever make changes.

And this is the same with the wins. There are always aspects that I should have done different. Regardless of the win. Next time it could be a loss because of lucky misjudgments.  I'm always trying to improve. I think your post is bang on.
