Trusting your first instinct

Quick thought - do you ever feel like your first instinct in a hand is usually the right one?

I’ve noticed that quite a few times I’ll have an immediate reaction - call, fold, whatever - and then I start thinking deeper… and end up changing my decision. And more often than not, that second guess is the worse one.

Not saying we shouldn’t think things through, obviously. But sometimes overthinking just pulls you away from what you already understood in the moment.

Lately I’ve been trying to trust that first read a bit more, especially in standard spots.

Curious if anyone else feels the same - or is it just me overthinking again 😄

I hear what you are saying but unless you record your thoughts in an organised way its really hard to "science" out these feelings with ourselves. Its is strange how the "feeling" plays out especially when your opponent is one of those types of players trying to feel you out with calls and raises.

Sometimes your first instinct might actually be the wrong one 😂

When it comes to decision making I rather relay on what I see than feel, but love to have a rare moment when I just "know" what my opponent have.

I remember the GGPoker DTD Final - lost half my stack on the first hand (KK vs AA). The guy who took my chips and I were at each other's throats for the rest of the game. Then, the moment came. I had QQ on a paired, flush-draw board with four players in the pot. The turn completed the flush... but it was a Q, giving me the full house. I didn't even need to think; I just knew he had hit the nut flush. While the others were overthinking the board, my first instinct told me I had him dead. I let him lead, he shoved, and I snap-called.

Didnt know if i was more happy of the feeling that "I knew" or that I actually got my chips back, haha

@mavrix, do you find your instincts are sharper against players you’ve been 'battling' with, or just in general

That’s a great story 😄 those spots where you just know are rare, but they really stick with you. I get what you mean though - I also try to rely more on what I see rather than just “feeling it”. But I think those instincts usually come from all the little things you’ve already picked up without realising. And yeah, I’d say it’s definitely sharper against players you’ve been battling with. You’ve seen more from them, there’s history, patterns… so when something clicks, it clicks faster.
