17th Out of 759… Luck or Strategy?
I played a poker tournament and finished 17th out of 759 players… so here’s the real question:
Was it luck, or was it strategy?
It’s easy to look at a deep run like that and assume the cards just fell my way. And yes, poker will always have an element of luck, you don’t make it through hundreds of players without a few things going your way.
But this run felt like more than just luck.
From the early stages, I stayed disciplined. I didn’t chase hands, didn’t force plays, and avoided unnecessary risks. While a lot of players were getting eliminated trying to build stacks too quickly, I focused on survival and smart decision-making.
As the field started to shrink, the game changed.
The pressure increased, blinds got higher, and every decision carried more weight. This is where strategy really kicked in. Knowing when to be aggressive, when to fold, and when to apply pressure made all the difference. It wasn’t about having the best cards every time—it was about playing the situation correctly.
Of course, there were moments where luck played its part.
A few key hands held when they needed to. A couple of risky spots went in my favor. And yes, there were times I avoided elimination by the smallest margins. That’s poker.
But getting to 17th out of 759 players isn’t something luck carries on its own.
It takes:
• Patience to outlast hundreds of players
• Discipline to avoid costly mistakes
• Awareness to adapt to different stages of the tournament
• Confidence to make the right moves under pressure
Reaching that position showed me something important, I’m improving.
At the same time, it also left me thinking: what could I have done differently to push even further? Because once you get that deep, the goal isn’t just to survive it’s to make the final table.
So was it luck or strategy?
Honestly… it was both.
And that’s what makes poker such a powerful game. The balance between the two is where everything happens.
