Coaching vs personal style

Hey !

Had a thought I keep coming back to.

We’re always told that working with a coach is one of the best ways to improve. And it probably is. Structure, discipline, understanding spots deeper - all of that matters.

But I do wonder sometimes - can it also go too far?

Every coach sees the game in their own way. Their style, their risk tolerance, their mindset. And not every player thinks the same way or reacts the same under pressure.

So what happens when you try to fit your game into someone else’s framework?

On one hand, you become more “correct”. More fundamentally sound. On the other - do you lose something? Instinct. Creativity. The natural way you see spots.

I’ve seen players improve massively with coaching.

I’ve also seen players become more hesitant, almost like they’re second-guessing themselves instead of playing freely.

Maybe the balance is somewhere in the middle - learn the structure, but don’t lose your own way of thinking.

Curious what you guys think.

Do coaches sharpen your edge - or can they sometimes smooth out what makes a player unique?
