Growing up as a Butchers Saturday Lad!

Morning Cardmates, Feeling a bit nostalgic today and thought I’d share a trip down memory lane.

I started thinking about my life growing up and from the age of twelve l got a Saturday job in the local butcher shop for…….

wait for it …….

£8. 50 a day.

My day would begin at 08-00 when I would arrive at the shop to Ken the manager a nice guy, very friendly fella. Well you had to be dealing with the local community (customers) in those days everyone knew everyone in the community.

Then there was Mark the butcher, he was a fit lad, an amateur boxer in his spare time.

He would rock up sometimes all bruised and battle scars from his boxing matches the night before.

We would get settled into the shop,I would get the kettle on, put on my white coat and blue and white striped apron and make them a brew.

The first big job was to wash the front window.

I would get a bucket of hot soapy water, three clothes, glass cleaner and the rubber squeegee.

Go outside and wash, dry and polish the front window and Ken would make sure I didn’t miss a spot from inside!

In those days, the floor behind the counter and back of shop was covered in fresh sawdust daily.

There were big sacks of the stuff at the back of the shop

I would have to brush all the sawdust up, mop the shop floor with disinfectant, once dried put fresh sawdust down.

Clean the ovens from all the cooked chickens, the metal trays all the meats go on and then onto the two walk-in fridge and freezer.

Once that was all done in the afternoon about 15-30 would be wind down time.

Scrape the butchers block with a wire brush and fresh sawdust to remove the top layer

Put all the meats back in the fridge and freezer, clean all the trays and our day was done!

This was just a blast from my past.

Cardmates I hope I haven’t bored you too much 😴

I know it’s not Poker, but it’s what started my will to grind things out and not give up!

I enjoyed bringing back old memories, and remembering the things that helped me to begin life’s journey.
