My Biggest Poker Lesson: A Bluff Can Make You a Genius or Cost You Everything!

If there's one thing poker has taught me, it's that bluffing is easy when you have nothing to lose in your imagination but a completely different story when your chips are actually on the line 😂

I used to think a good bluff was all about having the courage to fire big bets and make your opponent fold.

The more confident you looked, the better the bluff, right? Well, not exactly.

I was in this situation.

I'm sitting at a poker table with absolutely nothing impressive in my hand. The flop comes. My opponent checks and suddenly I see an opportunity. I make a bet, hoping to take the pot right there.

They call.

I started thinking, Okay, maybe I can still sell this story.

The turn comes, and I fired another bet. My opponent takes a moment before calling again. At this point bells started ringing in my head but instead, I'm already committed to the bluff. I've invested chips and I don't want to look weak by backing down.

Then the river arrives.

I have nothing. No pair, no draw, absolutely nothing to show for my confidence. But I decide to make one final aggressive bet, hoping to scare my opponent away.

They call instantly.

I turn over my cards, and they reveal a decent hand.

My bluff was exposed and my chips were gone just like that, and I'm left wondering why I tried so hard to force it.

That hand taught me something I wish I'd understood earlier.

This is not to disregard the fact that bluffing isn't a good stategy but doing it recklessly will cost you and I learned that lesson.
