Tired of NLHE? It’s Time to Go "Exotic" with Badugi!
If you’ve been grinding Texas Hold’em all week and the "Big Slick" (A-K) has let you down one too many times, I have the perfect antidote. It’s time to step away from the community cards and dive into the world of Badugi.
Badugi is one of the "Exotic" variants you’ll see listed in our sidebar, and while it might look intimidating at first, it is easily one of the most refreshing and addictive games you can play on platforms like ACR or CoinPoker.
Why Badugi?
In Hold’em, you’re always looking for pairs, straights, and flushes. In Badugi, those are your worst enemies. Badugi turns your poker brain upside down. It’s a game where the "worst" cards are the best, and the "best" cards are trash. If you’re on a losing streak, your Hold’em habits might be getting predictable. Badugi forces you to think in a completely different dimension.
The Basic Rules
Badugi is a four-card triple draw lowball game. Here is the 60-second rulebook:
The Goal: Make the lowest possible four-card hand where every card is a different suit and a different rank. This is called a "Badugi."
Aces are Low: The best possible hand (the "nuts") is A-2-3-4 of four different suits.
The "Duplicates" Trap: If you have two cards of the same suit (e.g., two Hearts) or two cards of the same rank (e.g., two 5s), one of them doesn't count. You are now playing a "3-card hand," which loses to any "4-card Badugi."
Triple Draw: You get three chances to discard your "bad" cards and draw new ones to complete your Badugi.
Why It’s a "Slump-Buster" for Losing Streaks
We’ve all been there, stuck in a rut where every river card feels like a personal attack. Switching to an exotic variant like Badugi is great for your mental game because:
Mental Reset: It breaks the "auto-pilot" mode. You can't just shove with pocket Jacks; you have to actually calculate draws and observe your opponents' drawing patterns.
Smaller Skill Gaps: Most players are "okay" at Hold’em but "terrible" at Badugi. If you spend just 30 minutes learning basic strategy (like not drawing to a 3-card hand if it contains a King), you already have a massive edge over the field.
Low Variance (Sort of): Because the hand rankings are so specific, it’s much harder for someone to "suck out" on you with a random lucky card compared to a 2-outer on the river in Hold'em.
