Poker then vs now
Been thinking about how much the game’s changed over the years.
When I first started, it felt a lot more instinctive. People played what they felt, made reads, trusted experience. There was less structure, less talk about ranges and theory.
Now it’s different. Players are sharper, more disciplined. There’s more study, more tools, more awareness of spots. You can’t really just “wing it” anymore and expect consistent results.
Not saying one era is better than the other - just different.
I do think the modern game rewards those who put in the work away from the table. But at the same time, the basics haven’t changed. Patience, discipline, understanding people - still matters.
Funny how some things evolve, and some stay exactly the same.
Anyone else feel this shift over time?
The shift from 'gut feeling' to 'GTO charts' has definitely changed the soul of the game. It's much harder to find those 'whales' who just play their favorite two cards regardless of position now!
Do you miss the old 'wild west' days, or do you prefer the discipline of the modern era?
