The Monday Night "Get-Even" Trap

It’s Monday evening, and if your poker session today didn't go according to plan, you are probably feeling that familiar, uncomfortable itch.

Maybe you busted near the bubble in an afternoon tourney, or maybe a couple of bad beats took a chunk out of your cash game stack.

Right now is the exact moment when average players make the worst decision of their week: they boot up a late-night turbo tournament or jump up in stakes to "get even" before going to bed.

Why the Late-Night Chase is Liquid Poison

We’ve all been there. You tell yourself, "I’ll just play one fast turbo structure, win my buy-ins back, and sleep like a baby."

You are playing tired: Even if you don't feel sleepy, your cognitive processing speed and patience are depleted after a full day.

You are playing with a deficit mindset: When your main goal is just to break even, you play scared. You fold hands you should call, or you force massive, unnecessary bluffs because you are trying to force a big layout.

Turbo structures kill edge: Late-night turbos turn poker into a high-variance lottery. You are essentially flipping coins while already frustrated.

My Advice for Tonight

If you are down for the day, close the client and log off. Accept the red day. The beautiful thing about poker in 2026 is that the games will be there tomorrow morning, completely fresh. Saving one buy-in by choosing not to rage-play tonight is exactly the same as winning a buy-in tomorrow. Protect your bankroll from your evening ego.
