Unpopular Opinion: Bankroll Management is Killing Your Fun (and Your Gains) 📉🔥

Alright, let’s get into it. Every poker "pro" and YouTube coach tells you the same thing: "You need 100 buy-ins for tournaments. Don't play above your means. Stay in the micros until you’ve saved a fortune."

I think that is the most boring advice in the history of gambling. The "Safe" Trap If you strictly follow bankroll management (BRM), you’re stuck playing $1 and $2 tournaments for approximately 4,000 years before you can move up. By the time you actually play for "real" money, you're burnt out, your game is stagnant, and you've spent more on coffee than you've won in prizes.

I’m not saying you should bet your rent money (please don't). But this obsession with being "safe" is why so many players never get better.

The Power of the "Shot"

I’ve had my biggest breakthroughs when I ignored the "rules" and took a shot at a tournament I had no business playing. Why?

  1. You Focus More: When the buy-in actually matters to you, you don't make those lazy "brain-fart" folds I talked about last week.
  2. Better Competition: You learn more from getting crushed by a $55 tournament regular than you do from winning a $1 "bingo" freeroll.
  3. The Rush: Let’s be honest—we’re here for the thrill. Winning 50 cents after four hours of grinding isn't a thrill; it's a chore.

Strict BRM is for people who want to treat poker like a 9-to-5 job. If you want to actually live a little, you have to break the rules.

šŸ’¬ Fight Me in the Comments! I know the "math guys" are going to hate this one. Go ahead, tell me why I’m wrong: Are you a "Strict BRM" robot or do you like to take the occasional wild shot?

  • What’s the biggest "out of bankroll" shot you’ve ever taken? Did it pay off?
  • Do you think playing for "pennies" actually makes you a worse player?
  • Or are you currently sitting with 200 buy-ins for the $0.11 cent games, waiting for the year 2030 to move up?

Let’s settle this - Safety or Glory? šŸ‘‡

Kmiarka, I agree completely glory all the way.I’ve sat in with the pros and streamers and it’s actually all the same hands and plays regardless of the buy-in. It’s just having the confidence and commitment and hitting position on the RNG that is the factors for me but excellent blog and hopefully more will appreciate it
